Is this practiced in South Africa? My question once again, do such groups of cyclists ride through these areas? I will be very grateful for your comments. Lesotho is certainly safe. I think road safety is a major issue.
I'm not a cyclist but drivers go way too fast and aggressively in those countries Many casualties compared to Europe and North America. Cycling is very popular in South Africa, but more as a sports activity with weekend races where they close the ro to other traffic.
These are the primary form of public transport, and often drive like lunatics, showing no compunction about forcing any other traffic off the road. It's bad enough if you're in a car, but if you're on a bike, the risk of a fatal accident is very real. Poor maintenance of ro in certain areas also means that potholes are a risk, but by the sound of the places you've travelled to date, you probably shouldn't be concerned.
I don't Biker independent adult lonelys needed what your preferred modus operandi is in terms of accommodation, but you'd also have to give some thought to where you'd plan to stay overnight, as camping on the roide is not safe in many of these areas Lesotho being the possible exception. So you'd need to find secure accommodation - either in established camp sites or more formal accommodation - happily these are pretty affordable in this part of the world, but you'd need to plan your itinerary around this.
Cycle-touring across South Africa is popular and commonly done. After all, every Cairo—Cape Town cyclist ends his or her tour by doing it. We loved this tour and want to go back to South Africa again someday. While we were initially worried about safety, it was a complete non-issue between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
We begged them to plan a safe route out of the city for us, and when we set off atwe found that we were sharing the road with lots of solo female joggers and sports cyclists — it was like any other country! I disagree that road safety is an issue, at least not for the route we chose. We mainly used minor ro with fairly little traffic, and there was often a decent shoulder to cycle on.
A side mirror might be helpful, but I personally would not rank South Africa as a particularly dangerous country for touring. It is true that wild camping is difficult in South Africa, not necessarily because it is unsafe, but rather because all land is fenced off.
When we needed to stop as darkness fell, we usually cycled up to the farmhouse and asked to pitch our tent, which usually resulted in an invitation to sleep inside the house. Your trip would be taking you across the portion of the country that we did not see, but there are enough blogs around showing how safe it is to tour there overall.
The only common complaint I have seen is foreign tourers feeling treated like walking ATMs by the impoverished population of Lesotho. A few years ago I met an elderly Swiss couple biking just outside Roma in Lesotho - they had cycled all the way around the eastern side of Africa and were on their way to Cape Town, and were planning to take the other coast on the way back to Europe. They told me they had no problems at all besides a few flat tyres. This Biker independent adult lonelys needed has been automatically locked due to inactivity. community lonelyplanet.
